Market Vitality
Apr 29
Sundays at Hillcrest Farmers Market has become a cherished weekly ritual. I see it as the beginning of the cooking week, purchasing enough to compliment the garden harvest so I do not have to buy much anywhere else. As the season progresses, there are encounters with produce rarely seen even in high end produce markets. Fresh borage and calendula flowers, Pakistani mulberries, Puebla avocados, Citron, squash blossom and Magenta Spreen lamb’s quarters to name a few. Combined with produce freshly harvest in the last 24 hours and the earthy sage wisdom of the farmers, for a foodie like myself it is akin to Shangri-la, the mythical land portrayed in movies. But it is real and the vitality this kind of food adds to a diet is unsurpassed in modern urban society.
